I’m White. Therefore I’m Racist. Good To Know.

I had no idea before I saw this little ad (“awareness”) campaign, backed by Mayor Don Ness of Duluth, Minnesota, that I’m a racist. And how do I know this? Well, I have white skin. So, DUH.
Actually, I must be REAAAAAAALLLY racist, y’all. Because I’m paler than most. I mean, honestly…my skin belongs in a dark pub somewhere.
Thanks for letting me know that I’m racist, Don Ness, simply by being white!
Now that we have that established, for the love of all that’s fashionable, please take off that God-awful sweater/tie combo. Please.

Does this “mayor” not know that other non-white races are perfectly capable of being racist? And shouldn’t he be working for cohesiveness in his city and not encouraging victimhood and division? That’s just crazy talk, I’m sure. Wonder who his constituents are.
Hard “to have an honest conversation”. Obviously. He can’t be honest about it either. dude….bite me.
“Maybe they’ll give us more jobs”? Could the interviewer not find an older, more intelligent person from whom to get a comment? Really?
Lucky for me, my white racist self married a brown guy, and he’ll be able to tell me when something racist is happening. Because I won’t be able to identify it otherwise.
Oh wow. I must be a super racist. I am so pale I am almost clear. I think that by doing stuff like this and bringing up race in every single situation, it is causing more division and more racism. there are ample opportunities for everyone regardless of gender, skin color or ethnicity ( or whatever categories you want to use).
The one little girl said something along the lines of “maybe it will be talked about now” I know she’s young, but really?
This is the wrong way to go about it; campaigns like this actually increase resentment between the races, and set the stage for greater racial balkanization.
You can’t legislate race or what’s in people s hearts, what you can legislate is policy that provides opportunity to everyone enabling them to advance their condition-that’s all our Declaration of Independence promised, not a color blind society, but a society which enables each individual the pursuit of happiness commensurate to their ability.
When I see marketing campaigns like this endorsed by a city government, what I see is an administration that really believes in the inferiority of certain groups of people and, who have no intentions, because they wont or don’t know how, to create economic policies, that would make the need for such signs, obsolete.
Kill WHITEY! Destroy the white man! Like George Soros, and Harry Reid, and Nancy Pelosi and Chrissii Matthews and Ed Shultz and Larry Odonnell!
I’m from MN and I’m offended by those billboards! What a douche bag. “Bringing forth this issue” ? Racism wouldn’t be an issue if Liberals didn’t keep it that way. I noticed that in his youth he worked for Jim Oberstar (who was beat out by Conservative Chip Cravaack in 2010 after a 35 year stint in Congress) which certainly told me ALOT about his mind set. Narrow-minded Liberal Yuppie thinking he’s going to educate the masses in a mining community.
It wasn’t hard to notice which age group supported the billboards and which age group understood what they represented.
Hmmm… let me think
Ethnically I am half Belarussian (“white Russian”) and half Cossack (Asian or “Black Russian”)
Religiously, I’m closer to Jewish than any other organized religion.
I have friends and military brothers & sisters from a wide spectrum of ethnic backgrounds: Ute, Japanese, Thai, German, Italian, Hawaiian, Chomoro, Scandanavian, Welsh, Scottish, Panamanian (Chiriqui), Tosk, Maygar, Arab, Persian, African, etc, etc, etc. We share ethnic culture and food with each other, enjoying what each brings.
One thing we all have in common: We are AMERICAN!
He obviously has never been to the south. Georgia is so far the other way now…….white people are treated like sh*** here. The black community is in charge of everything from local government, fire, police, education, and there is still always screams that the whites are racist…. I don’t get it.
Even when you went out and support Hermain Cain we were called racist. Of course Herman was called worse.
I’m in Minnesota and we LOVE Duluth. However, we will not be going there until each and everyone of those billboards are gone. They are insulting to those who actually think and pandering to those who don’t by shifting blame of racism to an entire race of people. RACISM works BOTH WAYS.
Off to contact the mayor and let him know his city has lost our business.
Olivia, I am so glad I had set down my cup of hot tea before I read your comment; it would’ve been through my nose and all over my keyboard by now!
Oh I see the racism alright! Racism oozing from the entitlement folk who play this card to play the martyr and get the free flow of tax dollars streaming into their communities.
I wish a group up there would bring suit against these a$$ hats, claiming that THIS is blatant racism against white people. Because frankly, I don’t see it any other way. Sheesh. (/eyeroll)
I get tired of the race/gender card being played. In this day and age, there are isolated incidences of each, but I as a woman have an equal opportunity as any man at any job if I want it. I may have to work harder to prove myself, but I am not afraid to do that. Get over the color of someone’s skin, or their gender and see their worth by their actions.
Crispus – Amen and, once again, well said. Our government’s role is to guarantee equal opportunity, not equal outcomes.
As far as this campaign “Is white skin really fair skin?” Every single representation of a “Racist” in this was white. Seriously??? There are no African-American racists? Or Asian racists?? or Hispanic racists??? This is a genetic defect in the Caucasian world only??? I live in a community (also in Georgia, Peggy) that has become predominately African-American. My son’s school is predominately African-American. He is continually called, “Cracker”, “White Boy”, “Whitey”, etc. Do the teachers or administration address it??? No, the kids are told just that they shouldn’t fight and that if someone picks on them or tries to hit them they should get away and tell a teacher. YEAH, running away in cowardice and tattling is their answer. This is public school’s solution to building our country’s future leaders.
What would happen if racial insults were used by the white kids against the black ones??? That is never allowed – NOR SHOULD IT BE. Racism is any form is unacceptable but somehow “Cracker”, “Whitey”, and “White Boy” are okay. Yes, we are white and yes, we know what racism is. And you Mr. Mayor can Suck It. You, sir, are the racist here and perhaps instead of endorsing this campaign you should be addressing your own personal deficits instead of deflecting them onto others.
His statements are racist and discriminatory on their face; (beliefs based solely on skin color, which are then acted upon) and he should be immediately recalled from office for unconstitutional conduct. He has literally allowed tax-payer money to be spent on racism. Apparently, he is so filled with white guilt that he finds it acceptable to be racist—against whites.
“When I see marketing campaigns like this endorsed by a city government, what I see is an administration that really believes in the inferiority of certain groups of people and, who have no intentions, because they wont or don’t know how, to create economic policies, that would make the need for such signs, obsolete.”
Bravo!
What amazes me is now ignorance is being advertised on billboards. This country is boiling over from divisiveness and liberals just turned up the heat.
If I’m in Duluth, and a black man walks up to me and curses me for being white and hits me, am I a racist? Apparently, based upon this jackwagon of a mayor.
And Steve, that sweet young lady probably was the smartest person the interviewer could find. I wonder what kind of job she wants white folks to give her? CEO? Brain Surgeon? Maybe she could be the head of the Diversity Department for the mayor of Duluth. That way she could use taxpayer money for jobs to help those poor people who continue to be victims of us mean old white folks.
Now excuse me while I go close the blinds, I don’t want the sun light to get in and ruin my pale white skin.
“And maybe this will make people start talking about it more…”
Um, yeah. That’s just what we need. MORE talk about race/racism.
“Is white skin really fair skin?”
HA!
Wow.
Strange how the people who cry racist the loudest are completely oblivious to what Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. taught and tried to espouse in society. For some reason, liberals never fail to show us how stupid liberalism is.
Olivia wins.
Okay this offends me in ways I never thought possible. Being from Detroit (and in th eminority I might add) the majority of the population is black and yet still the crime is high, the umemployment is high. Obviously white people’s faul, right? Oh wait…the mayor is black, the vast majority of all the people who work in the government in Detroit are black. oops.
This mayor is suffering from white guilt. It’s clearly only al liberal problem becuase they keep bringing it up.
I am white. I am not a racist. This campaign is offensive to me because it is AIMED right at me. They want me to feel bad. Well sorry, I don’t.
Oh yeah “Maybe they’ll start talking about it”? Get a clue, young lady.
I just want to cry, ya’ll.
Thank you obama for dragging the United States of America
back in time for no other reason than your own insecurity.
Can you imagine if they had put up the same billboard, but with black people instead???
OOHHHHH, snap. Woulda been heads rollin’!!!
I’m calling out the racist. It’s the mayor and the board who wasted taxpayer money on this drivel.
Oh wow, I’m racist because I’m white? Dang, the black guy was wrong when he said I was racist because I shaved my head (because I’m balding)! Wow, whoda thunk it, huh?
The question I would pose to this idiot is this: Why not talk about black racism, brown or yellow racism and not just white? Is he one of those moronic boneheads that believes only whites are capable of being racist? For the record, I have heard it said only whites can be racist. “I hate white people, but I’m not racist because I’m black”. Now is that not the most idiotic thing ever?
White guilt, I find it hilarious.
I am sooooo over being told that I am a racist simply because I am a white guy. The liberals have invented this “white guilt” and it has become nothing more than a way to suck up and retain the black vote. Fortunately more and more blacks are beginning to wake up and realize that the biggest impediment to their own prosperity is the race-baiting cons like Jesse Jackson and Al Sharpton, not “whitey”.
Rich, you also forgot to mention RED racism.
Wow, calm down you guys. I’m pretty sure the poster said when you’re white “IT’S HARD TO SEE RACISM,” NOT “when you’re white you’re racist.” Try not being so defensive and hearing the message. Geez.
Mrs. Snarkypants, you made me laugh. Thanks!
Jessica, it’s a white administration and ‘feel good’ white liberals setting up this campaign..so how’d they see it ? Are they just so much more special than the rest of us? Trust me..I have no trouble seeing racism…apparently, these people haven’t peeked their pointy little heads into a Hispanic ethnic-studies class. In some districts if you’re not Mexican you’re not allowed to take the class..in a public school. Can you see the LaRaza sponsored racism there, Jessica?
And someone tell miss “Maybe they’ll give us jobs now’” public-schooling victim that she can thank a half-white, half-black man in Washington if the jobs scene is sparse.
This is institutionalized Discrimination and if the people of caucasian Origin in Duluth had a clue they would sue the current administration for Discrimination on an Institutionalized level .Racism exists in America but not just with white people !!!
How clever. Remind minorities that all whites are racists in plenty of time for the 2012 General Election
This guy is like the polar opposite of Mr. Rogers although he kinda looks and sounds like Mr. Rogers. something askew in this guys head.
We need to talk more abut racism? Really? I was always taught that the more you scratch a wound the more likely it was to become infected. I have no problem seeing racism. I grew up on the predominantly hispanic side of town. I went to a large high school that was about 75% Mexican American and even though we all had roughly the same economic status, white kids were regularly denied access to jobs programs and scholarship opportunities. The school even disciplined hispanic kids differently. While white kids could be suspended, hispanic kids were given “in school suspensions” so that the school district would lose the funding they got for the “minority kids. The mexican American kids regularly called us names in Spanish as though we couldn’t figure our what they were saying. As a result I became fluent in Spanish curse words. Thankfully I have forgotten most of them.
Where’s the billboard that says “It’s hard to see sexism if you’re a man”? Or “It’s hard to see homophobia if you’re straight”? I’m sure we will see those soon, too. Gotta make sure the perpetual victims stay victims, now don’t we?
obviously, not only do none of you go to my social work school, but you weren’t in class with me wednesday night to find out that conservatives are bigots. get with the times!
and pray that i can just get my sheepskin and get the hell out of there. thanks!
Shhhh. Quiet, y’all. We are about to launch into black history month. So far, my 4th grader has spent a month studying Native Americans, and all of February will be devoted to black Americans. Guess how many days she has studied the European colonists? 3. And during that time the teacher actually called the Europeans “stupid.” I kid you not. Yet, I am a racist.
I live in the South. Almost as far South as you can go in Alabama. Racism is here too, but it is black folks that are going out of their way to show how terribly racist they are. I am not racist, I simply choose to not like anyone that acts against others without any reason or cause. The race card has often been played in front of me starting when I was a kid long ago, as a young adult and as an adult reaching middle age. I have found that this kind of racism keeps getting worse, and for the past few years the racism has expanded beyond belief. I have a mixed bloodline(no African blood) and I clearly dislike certain types of people, but only because of the way they act. I do not hate based on skin color, but as it goes, these people going out of their way to show their evil ways, sways me to be very cautious of them all, no longer trusting a soul until I know more.
Jessica: I find it incredible that you see nothing wrong with this statement “when you’re white “IT’S HARD TO SEE RACISM,”
WOW!
This campaign isn’t saying that white people are racist, only that they have an inherent advantage in a country where being white is considered “normal” and anything else is considered “ethnic” or of “foreign” origin. You don’t have to be racist to benefit from racism. This campaign is meant to merely point out that fact.
Joe, you’re right that black people can be just as racist as white people. In fact this campaign isn’t calling white people racist. I’m white and live in a majority black neighborhood, and my neighbor’s crazy uncle has called me racist names. After a tornado went through my neighborhood last year you wouldn’t believe how many people in my neighorhood accused me of being a white tourist from the suburbs coming to see the destruction before heading back to the white side of town. This campaign isn’t about individual racism, it’s about instituitional racism. It’s ingrained in ways we as white people have a hard time seeing. We don’t have to worry about people being afraid to pass us on the street late at night because we know the stereotypes. If we run for political office, you or I only have to run on our political ideas. Black american and asian american, and latino americas have to not only run on their ideas, they have the add pressure placed on them by society and the media of representing their race, as if they are supposed to represent not only themselves but an entire shade of skin with all its stereotypes. The point of this campaign is that even though you and I are not overtly racist, perhaps we don’t even hold any biases at all, racism is still present in ways that are much more subtle and difficult to address than just angry individuals calling each other racist names.
How is that statement not racist Joe?
The only people keeping racism alive are idiots like you. People who bitch about the things that they themselves created.
Personally I haven’t met anyone with fewer advantages than the white male. He has to endure being “sexist” “racist” a “bigot” “stupid” and “selfish” just by walking into the room. He has to work himself to death to get the same “advantage” that persons of other races get just by a small chemical in their skin.
Cry me a river. Then please drown yourself. Do it for equality.
Joe..”..they are not only supposed to represent themselves but an entire shade of skin with all it’s stereotypes.” How is that different then the liberal trumpet sound that white skin represents hate and bigotry. To say they are just pointing out racism we don’t see is bull. If whites are simply ‘blind’ to the racism others suffer, who is inflicting the ‘racism’ we are allegedly blind to? Answer; the whites…the other ones, I guess. So some of us are simply blind and the rest of us are blatant racists. The excuse doesn’t work.
So long as the same rules in society and government doesn’t apply to everybody, regardless of skin color, we will have racism.
Nothing has changed or will change.
The only thing this insulting billboard is going to do is create more racism, not less. People are growing tired of being convicted in abstention of something they are not. That alone will create racists.
It’s unfortunate.
“This campaign isn’t saying that white people are racist, only that they have an inherent advantage in a country where being white is considered “normal” and anything else is considered “ethnic” or of “foreign” origin.”
Hold on. Who CONSIDERS them “ethnic” or of “foreign” origin?
I’m half Polish. I don’t go around waving a Polish flag or wearing a gold pendant depicting the country of Poland, and my home doesn’t have artwork depicting ancient Polish royalty or Polish folk heroes. I don’t go around wearing a kilt or a tartan to inform everyone of my Scottish descent, or sporting the seal of my Irish clan. I don’t go around talking about “Mother Poland” or my “homeland” of Ireland or “my (Scottish) people.” Maybe if “my people” had worn the slur “mick” like a badge of honor from the era of their oppression until this day, I could walk around and claim “racism” too. Or maybe every time someone tells a “Polack” joke I should cry racism.
Or maybe people need to just freaking get over themselves and stop making an issue over the relative quantity of melanin in their epidermis.
Racism can be hard to see where there isn’t any.
In my high school classroom, the only comments that I’ve heard this school year that could be considered racist came out of the mouth of one “minority” student towards another “minority” group. People who are not “white” can sometimes be more racist against other people who are not “white” than people who are “white” are!
The mayor needs to have his brains thawed out. He’s been living in Duluth for too long.
We had black driver at my old job who was 400 pounds and spent more time eating then working, Any time things didn’t go his way he would go off agianst white people oppressing him. The rest of us black and white concidered him a joke. One day he started his white people are holding me down thing and one of the black drivers said without missing a beat that the only white man holding him down was Ronald McDonald.
What proves it for me, is not that you’re white but that you completely refuse to discuss the problem and white privilege. So yes I now believe you are a racist
I’m game. Let’s discuss “white privilege.”
Yes, it exists. It exists in LIBERAL circles. (Hello? Hollywood?) And guess what else? It’s going to CONTINUE to exist, as long as we (and by “we” I mean blacks and liberals) keep making EVERYTHING about race.
And so will “black privilege.” Because there most certainly is such a thing. It’s called Affirmative Action. It’s called the right to continue with divisive, racist, pro-black institutions and organizations, like black colleges and black churches and black television networks and black government organizations and black beauty pageants when we ALL KNOW that the “white” equivalent of those things would be racist. And they would. Unfortunately nobody will admit that the “black” version of those things is also inherently racist. ANYTHING THAT ELEVATES OR EMPHASIZES ONE GROUP OF PEOPLE AND EXCLUDES OTHERS BASED ON SUPERFICIAL FACTORS IS BIGOTRY. Can we seriously not agree on that?
Yes, there are little backwater towns and individuals scattered here and there for whom anti-black racism is still a significant factor. But those few holdouts would fade into obscurity if THE REST OF US JUST STOPPED ACTING LIKE THEY MATTERED. You’re a racist bigot? Your opinion no longer counts. NEXT!
But NO, instead we keep HAMMERING the subject to death, insisting on special laws, special rights, special privileges, and never questioning when those should expire so that we can work on ACTUAL EQUALITY.
Thabo, how backwards is it that you view racism as the refusal to acknowledge a meaningful difference between two people of differing skin pigmentation? I view racism as the INSISTENCE that such piddling little stupid insignificant differences MEAN something.
And I am DONE talking about “White Privilege” because a black person has now achieved the highest office in this land, and done it HANDILY. He won in areas that had been Republican strongholds for decades. He won BECAUSE he was black. It was a “Historic Election”! THE ELECTION WAS ABOUT HIS BLACKNESS.
But when (God willing) he loses in November, it will be because he was TERRIBLE at his job, and those who voted for him because of his skin pigmentation and his kickin’ campaign slogans and his swagger can’t justify that reasoning any more as they watch their country and their bank accounts circle the drain.
Anyway. You know, when I was growing up, the hope for racial unity was that we would be “color blind.” While people like Thabo whip out that race card at every opportunity (and create the opportunity if it doesn’t present itself), some of us really do NOT judge people by the color of their skin, but by the content of their character. (Sounds like something I heard somewhere once…) And for that WE are called racist.
Sounds kind of like the pot calling the kettle…
Yikes, never mind… I’m sure THAT remark would be “racist” too… Can’t be too careful…
“ANYTHING THAT ELEVATES OR EMPHASIZES ONE GROUP OF PEOPLE AND EXCLUDES OTHERS BASED ON SUPERFICIAL FACTORS IS BIGOTRY.”
Not necessarily, because we are Plurality too and our individual ethnic histories matter.….Elise, I hear you, but a couple of things should be put in their proper historical context : First, there is no such thing as a “Black college”, their called ” Historically” Black Colleges and Universities because they were created during segregation, when most blacks could not attend main stream colleges certainly in the south where the majority of blacks resided, and it was very difficult, but not impossible to do so in the north. My own great grandfather attended Princeton University, but being black, he could only attend in what was called then as a “correspondence student’ , which meant he had to sit in back of the class and was not permitted to ask questions or participate in class discussions, but could take exams and matriculate. He went on to found number black churches (what else would you call them in segregated communities), in Sumter South Carolina around the turn of the century, where many are still standing today.
Remember most historically black colleges and universities were started by whites who patriotically were concerned with the development of blacks, in fact Spellman College is named after its chief benefactor, the wife of Nelson Rockefeller, who’s maiden name was Spellman. Even today, all historically black colleges and churches are integrated and accept white members, in fact Hampton University’s (Virginia) School of Architecture, which is solid, has more white students then black. And .of course a couple of years ago, Morehouse University (Atlanta) graduated its first White Valedictorian who turned down an opportunity to go to Harvard on scholarship to attend Morehouse because he wanted the diverse experience. He played football, pledged and fraternities are huge on historically black campuses, and left as one of the most popular and well liked students there. Likewise, over a third Bishop T.D. Jake’s congregation is white or Hispanic.
Also BET (Black Entertainment Television), an operation of which I am intimately familiar, their NY and DC staff is half white, including management, I cant talk about their Atlanta offices, but remember the network was started primarily with white investors who correctly saw a profitable market to exploit, and the network is now owned by Viacom, hardly a black company who’s President, Sumner Redstone, is about as far from a black man as you can get LOL.
To call these institution bigoted is to simply not to understand American history or American culture. In fact these institutions were created to fight bigotry by both blacks and whites; you could not have had a civil right movement with out the so called black church, and their existence today remind us of the path we’ve taken to build a society from diverse people, with diverse experiences from all over the world. And in this uniquely American way blacks are NOT unique at all: the Mormons have Brigham Young, the Irish have Notre Dame and Villanova, the Jesuits have Georgetown and my alma matter Fordham University, the Jewish community has Yeshiva: none of these are bigoted intuitions, in fact they speak to the pluralistic nature of our democracy which is a strength, not a weakness.
What is a WEAKNESS are these damn signs, created by a small third party around this Mayor, which is causing rank and file blacks and whites, who had NOTHING to do with this stupid campaign, to hurl stones at each other, and that is a F******G stupid and sad statement about our fiber as a culture.
Crispus:
You are completely awesome and your posts rock my world.
Elise – Well-spoken.
M:-)
Mayor Ness just lost a vote. These signs are completely hypocritical and don’t add up whatsoever. Poorly thought out. But now that I am being told I am racist whether I like it or not, maybe we should go spray paint all the billboards white. Right?
They dont want to combat racism, they want white people to bite the dust, plain and simple.
That’s what hate does to people.
Elise and Crispus both of your posts were well said and both have valid points.
It seems people tend to forget the minute the individual forms a collective they cease to be an individual let alone by or for the individual. I also tend to think that people are being brain washed and are clueless as to what real racism is.
And let’s remember that just as the black churches were integral to the Civil rights movement, so was ‘white’ participation. It’s amazing what Americans can accomplish as a team.
Im not racist, I am culturalist, if you’re self reliant, responsible, hard working, want to earn your livelihood honestly and dont start **** with other people, I like you.
If you’re a whinny, dependent, annoying, criminally prone, self victimizing POS who blames “racism” for being pathetic, then whatever your skin color **** YOU!
anyone with a triple digit IQ KNOWS that this kind of stuff is being used to CREATE racism.
Divide and conquer.
How is Obama president if we “whites” are so racist. The more and more I think about this, the more and more stupider it gets. Shame on you guys and shame on Mayor Ness. This is an Obama agenda for presidency. Using “racism” as his political booster rather than what he has accomplished in office which isn’t much..
anyone who supports this movement is a racist. Think about it?
This campaign is pathetic, low, and not at all progressive.
http://youtu.be/Rj-mSBipPqQ – If u support this campaign u support this guy!!!!!!! LMAO anyone changing their minds yet?
Black Man: Interesting video link. And which guy in the video are you referring to?
Whomever is representing the UMD multi-cultural center in the video with the jacket pins
So he’s going to use his 2nd amendment rights that he says he doesn’t believe in? Did I hear that right? This poor fellow is a very angry confused young man
Why didn’t they cut to the chase and say, “It’s tough to see racism if you’re a conservative?” Cause that’s what they really want to say.
Racism and prejudice are a part of the human condition, just like dishonesty and sloth. We all struggle with it. And if you don’t believe that it doesn’t affect people of all races, just try to be an anglo male at a native American activists gathering, or for that matter, be a white guy walking into a “black” bar.
I used to care about racism. I thought is was bad. I don’t care anymore. It has become a no win situation for white folks. So …. all you envy ridden Negroes out there can suck it up.
Try getting ahead by using your brains instead of your hate, envy, genitals and government programs that make you look inferior to have to use them in the fist place.
No wonder you are all poor. it’s not about your color, it’s about your stupidity and bad behavior.
Try cleaning up your neighborhoods and plant some flowers. Open a can of paint … you know like Italians do to make their homes look like clean safe place to live.
I live in a town that has the exact reverse of the W/B percentage of the Duluth population.
I was planning a vacation to Duluth this summer. I guess I’ll have to change my plans.
I’ll be much more comfortable stayng here in white Minorityville, living amongst the 90%.
I have never been called a racist in my town.
Correct me if I’m wrong, but isn’t calling all white people “racist”… racist in itself??
no, it’s not racist if non-white people say stuff. it’s only racist when racist white people say stuff. and all white people are racist. and all racists are white people. KILL WHITEY!!!
love,
a white guy
