ATTENTION TOWNSPEOPLE: This Was An EPIC DAY.

Written by  //  October 26, 2010  //  Weeps And Glees  //  27 Comments

So Daisy and I have been looking forward to tonight’s state dinner for WEEKS now, and have discussed what we’d wear and how we’d hug assault Gov. Christie etc. etc. So let me just tell you how the day started.

First, I get a note from Daisy that she has been puke-tastic since like 2am. And it’s not even the kind of puke-tastic where you get to just puke and feel better. It’s the kind of puke-tasticness where you WANT to puke, but can’t, and instead simply dry heave all day long and never get relief. She tried all day long to feel better, but nothing was working, and by 3pm she had to make the impossibly difficult decision to skip the festivities. That was the first sucky thing that happened.

The second sucky thing that happened was that I got a note from a buddy of mine at the GOP HQ which said that Gov. Christie would not be attending the pre-dinner reception after all, but instead would be swooping in to speak, and then quickly swooping back out, and that there would be basically no time to get anywhere near him. This was disappointing, for sure, but it also made me feel a little better for Daisy because I figured she wouldn’t be missing much.

At the last moment, I decided to take my dad with me in Daisy’s place, and this actually made Daisy very happy, because she loves my dad. So off we went to the downtown Westin, and I got to introduce my dad to Mitch Daniels, and Todd Young, and Doug Cox, and I saw many friends including State Treasurer Richard Mourdock and Prada and DeeDee Benkie.

Murray and Mitch spoke for a bit at the reception, and then it was time to move into the main dining room and eat and wait for Gov Christie to arrive.  I confirmed with every possible source that it would be essentially impossible to get a photo with him, but when I saw Big E, he said if there was any way to do it, he would let me know.  We all sat down to eat, and after a bit, I saw a lot of commotion and then watched as Gov Christie walked into the room and went to the front/center table and sat down.  I looked at Big E and he looked at me, and motioned for me to go over to him.  So I went up to Big E and said, “You really think I can just go over there???” and he said, “Sure” and so as my dad looked on in astonishment/horror/glee, I walked to Gov. Christie’s table, where he was speaking with Mitch and Murray, and I tapped Murray on the shoulder and said, “Murray – you know what I have to do…” and all three of them looked at me, and Mitch just shook his head and laughed the way he does when he knows I’m being obnoxious, and Murray moved aside, and before I knew it, Gov. Christie was extending his hand to me and I was grabbing it, and I said this:

“Gov. Christie – you have NO IDEA how much I love you.”

And he looked sort of startled but smiled warmly, and I went on: “I rearranged my entire trip to Vegas just to meet you tonight, and seeing you sitting here next to Mitch is basically a dream come true for me.”

And he smiled some more and said thank you and I said, “I know someone you know – Susan Enderly, (who is the NJ State Chair of Women For Christie and who sits on the Board of Gov’s for NJ’s Federation of GOP Women), and she reads our site, Chicksontheright.com.”  And he said, “Oh!! Well, then I am going to have to read it too!”  And I told him that we write about him all the time, and that we admire him SO MUCH, and then I asked him if I could have a photo, and he said of course, and then Murray took the photo of the three of us and I self-portraited a facesmash – and they make me want to die of happiness whenever I look at them:

As I began to leave the table and say goodbye, I vaguely remember saying something to the effect of, “I have totally fantasized about this very moment” or something equally embarrassing.  And as I ran off, a professional photographer of some sort who had also been taking pictures stopped me to get my contact info, so I’m hoping there are even MORE pics to come.  But they can’t possibly be better than these two.

Within just a few minutes after that, Christie spoke, for nearly 40 minutes I think, with no teleprompter, no notes – NOTHING – and he was BRILLIANT.  Hilarious at times, serious at others, inspiring, captivating, and totally really just completely spectacular.  He was everything, frankly, that Obama could only DREAM about being.

I decided after his speech that since it’s difficult to imagine either Christie or Mitch being VP’s to each other, since they are both true leaders, that they should simply be co-Presidents.  I can’t imagine a more fantabulous dream team to lead our country back to glory.

The only thing missing from the evening was Daisy.  :(   I am heading to Vegas in the morning, and she’ll likely be keeping you guys company more than I will over the next few days, so make sure to be extra nice to her since she’s feeling kinda puny.

More pictures from the evening after the jump!

How cute are Mitch and my dad?  THEY ARE THE CUTEST:

Here’s Doug Cox, future Johnson County Sheriff:

And the best State Treasurer EVER, Richard Mourdock:

And the impossibly gorgeous DeeDee Benkie:

Co-presidents, you guys.  Just imagine it. :)

Oh my gosh! I think this is my favorite Chicks column ever. It just makes me so happy. I swear, I WAS laughing out loud reading how you told Gov. Christie how much you love him. THAT would be my moment in heaven having 30 seconds with him!! So jealous, but so happy for you, too!!
    Yay!!

There was a time when every home medicine cabinet had a littlle bottle of Paregoric to take care of “puke-tasticness,” but the FDA long ago labeled this magic potion contraband. More’s the pity, cuz a little drop could have got Daisy to the party. One of these days someone is going to do us all a favor and sunset that benighted bureaucracy.

  8. CK October 27, 2010 at 8:37 am ·

Yay! I’m sure that your sincere enthusiasm was a highlight of the evening.

(Boo stomach yick for Daisy, though. Booooo that.)

As an aside, I was at a party for a family friend and an older couple from North Jersey happened to be there. I asked the wife what she thought of her Governor. She got an incredibly sour look on her face and said, “Well, I’m not a Republican, so I don’t care for him. But he is doing exactly what New Jersey really needs right now, and things are improving.” I told her that I wasn’t positive, but it sounded like she did kinda like him. She wasn’t amused, but her husband smiled at me and said, “We’ll never admit it, because he’s a Republican, but we do.”

I thought that might have been one of the best begrudging political endorsements ever.

And now I’m joining Right Coast in the ‘Jealous Corner.’

Looks like a good time. Great photos. The ones with the Governors are nice but for some reason I like the one with Dee Dee. ;)

Oh, thank you Mock for letting us fantasize through you! Ahhhh, it must have been sheer heaven hugging Gov. Christie!! But then to have Mitch on the other side…WOW! I’m loving the “co-presidents” idea…a girl can dream….

Daisy…hope you’re feeling better!! Rotten timing, huh?

Thanks, Chicks…I had to read it to my husband while he was shaving this morning!!

  11. Janice October 27, 2010 at 9:43 am ·

Mock, I think I had like 40 emotions reading this – the prevailing two were total geeked out happiness for you, and complete and utter jealousy. Chris Christie completely rocks the political world IMHO and you got to FACEMASH HIM! Glees couldn’t quite cover it.

Sorry you had to miss Daisy – but look at the bright side – now that Gov Christie is going to be reading your site – I am sure your chance will come to meet the big guy.

    Love you chicks!

  12. JL October 27, 2010 at 10:34 am ·

So, how squishy were those supertastic pinchable cheeks??? hahah!!!

  13. Laurel October 27, 2010 at 11:50 am ·

Poor Daisy! I hope you get better real quick…especially since you have a little Dandelion.

I’m not jealous, even though I know I should be. Why?

Because Mock and Daisy do a fantastic job of representing all of us out here in the hinterland of real people who do the actual real work in this country and pay real taxes. I don’t think I could find two better women to represent us.

Besides I live in the pariah state and nobody good ever comes here so I might as well live vicariously.

Boy I miss the good ol’ days.

  14. Brenda from IL October 27, 2010 at 3:30 pm ·

    Jealousy, thy name is Brenda.

Oh, Mock, I’m so happy for you. I know what a thrill that must have been for you! (did you get tingles up your leg?) Oh, to be there in between those two bo-hunks…..wow!

I missed mass at my son’s school this morning because I had to hear Gov. Christie interviewed on WLS radio…..just could not miss it. Sorry, God….I’ll be there on Sunday, I swear!

    Daisy, get better soon!

  15. Anonymous October 27, 2010 at 3:55 pm ·

Mock, you really have to get over your shyness! I never really thought I would really see Christie’s mug up close, face smashed (Semi face smashed) on this site…what great custom content to have, you are really building some wall of fame photo gallery!…sorry Daisy opted out, hope she is feeling better, I freaking hate nausea.
Maybe you are already, but I would love to see you ladies get rich! Cool shot of Genetics.

  16. Daisy October 27, 2010 at 4:15 pm ·

Thanks for the well-wishes, everyone! I have managed to keep a plain baked potato and some Gatorade down today. So I have that, at least. I don’t have pictures with Christie, but I’m hoping there’ll be another shot in the future. Possibly when he’s running for President? A girl can dream.

You know what I love? Our readers. You guys made me smile today, and THAT, my friends, is epic.

    :-)

You’re in the big time for sure – Awesome. I’m sooo sorry Daisy couldn’t be there, but she was in spirit. Your blog is one of my favorite reading stops during the day (in between grading essays and running around picking up kids . . .)

Keep the good vibes and informative posts coming! Thanks for sharing your experience!

Daisy!!! We don’t drink Gatorade! We drink Powerade. I really shouldn’t have to explain this to you.

  20. KT October 27, 2010 at 10:46 pm ·

Well, with Daisy not getting the face smash just lets me know that we will get to live thru you two again because I am sure she WILL at some point! I look forward to the day when campaign managers say to the candidate “If you want to win you have to make the face smash wall of fame!” lol
Hope you feel better soon Daisy and Mock I so envy you!

Just to be clear to everyone (in the event Daisy’s pregnant again) that we only had lunch, in a public place, and I went straight back to work afterwards.

Curiously, Daisy DID say something about interviewing an ex-Governor of Arkansas or something….
