The Greatest Play In Baseball

A clever and competent reader sent this to me, and if you’ve all seen it and you’re wondering how I can be so out of touch that I HADN’T seen it until today, I have no excuse, except that I typically don’t pay much attention to baseball. I probably know less about baseball than just about anything, but I’m certain of this: that is definitely the best play I’ve ever seen.
LOVE.

Great video! What a patriot!
Love it! Thanks for posting!
This was back when they didn’t tolerate this kind of “expression.,” This was long before the ACLU would’ve demanded these poor, downtrodden individuals be allowed a forum for their expression, and the Cubs’ organization wouldn’t have to apologize for their actuons.
Fabulous, though I’m surprised that no one is weeping for their stifled ‘freedom of expression’.
Nahhh, I bet you know more about baseball than…hmmm, rugby? or cricket?
As a life-long Chicago Cubs fan, I remember this incident very well and have seen the video many times since it happened. I guess I can forgive you for not ever having seen it. But you “know less about baseball than just about anything”? I’m not sure I can forgive THAT!!
Re-posting on my Facebook page.
I don’t remember this but he made a great statement his love of country and it’s symbols. The is no attaboy big enough to give him for this act so long ago
I hadn’t seen the video or heard the story before either, so you’re not alone! Thanks for sharing!
I never get tired of this video and it is from a time when athletes had integrity.
This is not baseball and it’s more recent but how many remember this one with the American Flag? Love it.

as a former ‘angeleno’ i remember this vividly.
i was there for this game and saw it firsthand.
rick was MAGNIFICENT.
EVERYONE stood and sang, we all applauded.
it was a memory i will never forget.
(and it’s a good memory for a then, 19 year old)
I still remember one LA Law episode. I normally didn’t get to watch it because I came from a strict family who enforced bed time and TV time. However, my older sister who was addicted to the show taped it and was wacthing this episode one day so I got to see it.
Although like many shows it had many lonng and short running storylines going on at one time, and I apologize to the fans of the show, I don’t remember which attourney it was or even which side they were representing. The main storyline was a man who was suing another man for beating him up. Typical, but the circumstances, especially for the time, were not. Defendant was a vet and attending a memorial day celebration. Plaintiff decided to use his first admendmant right and burn the American flag. Defendant beat the ever living crap out of him. Again I can’t remember the specifics but I do know medical bills were not an issue. The palintiff was suing for punative damages saying his civil rights were violated. (Police declined to arrest him, only issued a warrant. Defendant showed up, plead guilty and paid a fine so criminal matters were settled.)
I do distinctly remeber the ruling. It was a jury trial. Both sides argued very well and it was a charged case. The jury deliberated for a long time and came back with legally the only one they could. He plead guilty in a criminal court, they had to find him guilty. But it was up to the judge to award punative damages. He made a great speech about the rights of the first amendment being infaliable and praised the jury for coming back with the right decision and not letting emotions interfere. He then went on to talk what we “can” do and what we “should” do. He then informed the defendant that what he did was wrong, smiled and awarded the plaintiff………$1. That’s right ONE dollar. In other words, what you did was wrong but so was he, now you are even. I thought it was great.
