Really, Mexico? You’re Serious?

Look at this lovely and threatening ad - an ad placed by Mexico in an Arizona newspaper.

Threatening American tourists. There’s a brilliant idea, Mexico. But, then again, I’m sure the Democrats will give you a standing ovation for this, too.

Wow.

I’d like to know what the hell the Arizona newspaper was thinking in publishing the ad. Does anyone have any sense anymore??

  2. Cynthia May 22, 2010 at 9:47 pm ·

Now that’s the way to shoot yourself in the foot

Are we really surprised by this? The leader of their country came to our soil and ridiculed our domestic policy—something you just don’t do! Major faux pas, to say the least. They just don’t seem to get it.

Get a clue, Mexico. You depend on us for many things, remember? By the way, no more family/friend trips to Cancun, Puerto Vallarta, Cabo, etc.

I am proud to say I have never set foot in Mexico and now I know I never will.

I was planning a trip back to Cabo, but now I’m looking at either Hawaii, or the US Virgin Islands. No passport needed, and they speak English in both.

You’ve got it all wrong – the ad is meant to say, “In Sonora we are looking AFTER people from Arizona.” This is to promote tourism in Mexico, can’t you see? I propose to ask the illegal immigrants…err… undocumented Democrats to take advantage of the offer and take a vacation there, a long one. After all, vacations are a new human right, paid for and arranged by the benevolent Government.

  7. Tazzy May 22, 2010 at 10:20 pm ·

Wait? Is this supposed to get people to vacation in Mexico? And, Sonora, if they did come in from Arizona to Mexico, they’d do so legally. “Morans”.

  8. Tazzy May 22, 2010 at 10:29 pm ·

Btw, I went to the website and tried to send a message. I couldn’t get through. :( (

This actually may have been a mistake made by the newspaper.. I saw this a Michelle Malkin’s site.. http://www.michellemalkin.com

I just called and spoke to a man from the Mexican tourism board in Sonora.
Apparently, the Arizona Republic cut off half the ad. It was supposed to say …looking for people from Arizona who want to have fun” There are also supposed to be families having fun reflected in the glasses. The A. Republic is supposed to print corrections today and tomorrow.
By the way, they aren’t mad about Arizona’s law. They want the drugs and illegals to stop too. He said the drug and illegals trade are hurting them badly.
I suggested they call Fox News and ask to come on to talk about it. He wrote it down and said he is going to tell his boss. We’ll see.
The state of Sonora has actually been pretty supportive of the efforts to stop illegals and drugs. Their governor has a history of going against the rest of Mexico.
We’ll see, as I said. Maybe he was telling me the truth. He seemed upset and he loves the US. He went to school in VT.

I hope it was a mistake, this is really not the time for this kind of mistake though..

I’m boycotting any travel or trade with Mexico. It may mean giving up some great food, but it’s a small sacrifice for my principles.

  11. Cynthia May 23, 2010 at 12:04 am ·

It seems that a lot of countries are lining up to take pot shots at America with the blessing of our president and democrats.

  12. MizDi May 23, 2010 at 12:26 am ·

Cindy, then you’re safe with Taco Bell … that’s not real Mexican food …

  13. Tazzy May 23, 2010 at 2:44 am ·

Maybe we should boycott Mexican restaurants which support the boycott of Arizona. I’m sure there must be legal residents who have come here to make a living. Why hurt them if they support the law.

  14. Deeka May 23, 2010 at 10:59 am ·

OK, kids…let’s not get too carried away. I’m more inclined to believe this is just poor marketing and nothing more. These types of marketing campaigns don’t just spring up overnight. It’s been in the works long before the AZ law.

Bad idea, worse timing. That’s all.

  15. Laurel May 23, 2010 at 12:33 pm ·

    Deeka: You know that how?

  16. Laurel May 23, 2010 at 12:35 pm ·

Mexico seems to want to pick a fight. They are losing their current ‘civil war’, and yet they pick another.

No wonder they have to outsource their poor.

  17. Lyea May 23, 2010 at 1:42 pm ·

As much as I hate to admit it, I really think this was just tacky advertising. It seems like they’re trying to use a current event to promote tourism to their country, but this definitely wasn’t the way to do it.

  18. Deeka May 23, 2010 at 3:39 pm ·

@Laurel: I don’t pretend to know with certainty. I can only look at the facts laid before me and make a decision. I looked at the ad, went to the tourism website , through in what I know of marketing campaigns and made a logical conclusion. Is it right? I think it is, but admit it could be wrong. I’m about 80-20 sure that I’m right.

  19. el pato May 23, 2010 at 4:17 pm ·

@ Laurel, while they are outsourcing their poor to us, Polaris is moving their factory to Mexico!!
I’d say, boycott Polaris products too!!

  20. el pato May 23, 2010 at 4:22 pm ·

by the way, i just went to the website and saw this in their
request to visit, “Sonora is a unique and safe tourist destination”

i noticed that they put “SAFE” destination.
is that because of all the crime there that they have to make it a point of telling you, “HEY, IT’S SAFE HERE!!”
    uh, no thanks.
I’m with Cindy, don’t travel to mexico or buy products from there either! :o /

  21. SusieQ_TX May 23, 2010 at 5:07 pm ·

I live within 20 miles of the Mexican border in Texas. I’d like to take all my tea party friends with signs to one of the big international bridges and protest Mexico.

It is common here for folks to go over to Mexico and shop and eat on the week-ends. Well, I’m boycotting Mexico. I invite all other border dwellers to do the same.

  22. JDN May 23, 2010 at 5:45 pm ·

Cindy, just think of all the GAS you will be saving:-)

  23. Tazzy May 23, 2010 at 7:06 pm ·

Deeka, when you see the ad, how do you interpret the ad as a whole? I mean, the picture and the copy together.

  24. Deeka May 23, 2010 at 9:37 pm ·

I thought the picture, under other circumstances (“In Puerto Rico We Are Looking Out For People From Georgia”, for example) would be fairly benign. Since it is a tourist bureau, it made sense that this may not be what was portrayed. A visit to the web site seemed to confirm that it’s nothing more than an ad campaign.

Look…ad campaigns don’t spring up overnight. It is unlikely this was developed in response to the Arizona law. It is in poor taste and can certainly, under the current conditions be construed as threatening. I just don’t think it is. A smart tourist bureau would have pulled the ad. But are they even aware of the Law? Are they even aware of their President’s words on US soil? Hell, I don’t know.

But I’m repeating myself for the third time.

  25. SU Z Q May 24, 2010 at 12:01 pm ·

Sonora is a premier tourist destination, especially for visitors from neighboring Arizona.

Recently, Sonora has experienced a boom in tourism, especially in the city of Puerto Peñasco, due to its being the nearest beach to many population centers in Arizona.
    (that from wikipedia)

Really? Ya feel lucky punk? well do you??

Seems like a pretty bold move….you don’t tug on superman’s cape, you don’t spit into the wind..

Is the payoff for being clever worth the repurcussions???

I think people should boycott Mexico. I don’t think they like us much.
