Hey, France? No Offense, But You Are INSANE.

According to this, married or cohabitating couples in France could pay fines, get cautioned by police, or be JAILED if they insult each other during arguments.

I’m not making this up. There’s a new law, expected to be implemented within the next six months, which would ban “psychological violence.” This includes shouting, or insulting your spouse about their appearance. Seriously.

The French dude who announced the law said, “The creation of this offence will allow us to deal with the most insidious situations – situations that leave no visible scars, but which leave victims torn up inside.”

I mean, any person with an Actual Brain can see the slippery slope here. A sociologist quoted in the article said, “The next step will be to make rudeness a criminal offence. The police and courts will be over-stretched trying to deal with numerous cases.”

What are they going to ban next? The silent treatment?

Now, I happen to be a person who is in one of those impossibly perfect relationships that makes other people want to vomit. Mr. Mock and I have had approximately 3 fights in our entire 12 year history, and even then, we barely even raised our voices at one another. We just have insanely good compatibility. But even so, I can appreciate that it’s possible for couples to be verbally abusive to each other. I just don’t think you can put legal definitions around that.

It’s just one more place that government doesn’t belong.

Before someone comments that they were in an emotionally abusive relationship and I don’t understand, blah blah blah…please understand I’m not CONDONING verbal abuse. I’m saying this is a stupid law. Period.

Congratulations, you just created a huge market for apartments. This basically creates a disincentive to get married or live together.

How are you so stupid you don’t realize that?

Just to clarify, you’re talking to France, right? ;)

This is exactly why a written Bill of rights is important. Assuming one doesn’t cut it. Free Speech, among others things, should not be theoretical, confirmed, and never assumed. I see a lot of abuse of the law coming from this.

Wait till our blue-state goo-goos pick up on this. “France made a good start, but we need to do better for The Children.”

I’m not sure what my marriage would be if my husband and I couldn’t argue…
